Yeah, on UG to get your ratio under control, get a few popular torrents and leave them seeding.

MAME is a good one. Do not dl the whole thing though. Get all files that are below say 15-20 MB. When a new version of MAME is released get onto it straight away. Use clrmame pro and torentzip to update your torrent to the latest version and start seeding straight away. This puts you on the leading curve of the dl cycle. You will need to dl about 600MB of the new torrent to replace what has changed from the last version, but you will easily ul that in a week.

Get a good PSX or Saturn collection torrent. dl only some of the more popular game images and just permanently seed them. Check out top ten lists for these old systems to find likely images that are popular.

I do this and my ratio is good. Healthy enough that when things like a new gb are are uploaded, I can get them straight away with out worry. And of course patience is a virtue on UG.

Because of GBA extensions files takes too much space, so I decided to pack all (firstly unpacked) GBA files to ZIP's. Visual Boy Advance runs GBA roms from ZIP's with no problems, but Gamebase DON'T (runs only GBA's). Can I do something, to force Gamebase to run all roms from ZIP's ?

  • Add support for .ZIP files in the emulator properties:
    - Click GEMUS, <Emulator Name>.
    - Under Supported Native file Types, append ;ZIP.
  • For each game, point Gamebase to the GBA file inside the .ZIP file:
    - Select a game and click on the file name in the status bar.
    - Browse to the correct zip file and lick OK
I don't know if there is a way to automate the second step, so it will be quite a lot of work to convert it to ZIP files.
BTW there is a new version of the Gamebase frontend coming that supports 7ZIP files.
It could be worth waiting for it, because with the new version you can store all ROM dumps in one 7ZIP file that is not bigger than a zip file with one dump inside it.

K.C.: I remember when several weeks ago You helped me with Project64 v1.6, You mentioned about ZIP's too (to delete the extension). So I've been thinking about it yesterday and I added ZIP to GBA Gamebase, but it did not help. Now, when I see the "second step", this is missing solution for me. Probably it takes a lot of time, but at least I'll start with this. If it takes too much time, I'll wait for next Gamebase :)

this updated MDB file will run .ZIP instead of .GBA

then rezip each GBA file using the same filename.

and remove zip from the emulators.ini supported files.

For sure GBA roms with .7z compression will be smaller than ZIP's, but I prefer to waste this (approx.) 1-2GB more, but ZIP's will be more useful not only for Gamebase. I'll leave original .7z roms on disk, to check the newest Gamebase with it either.

Thanks for the zip support. But now I have the problem that the Gamebase doesn't start anymore. It says it needs a newer Gemabase Version. I am usin GB V1.2. What verison do I need ?
And with the old mdb file I have the problem that if I scroll through the games it sometimes hangs up. I have several gamebases installed on my PC but this problem appears only with the GBA version. Any hints what I am doing wrong ? Thank you.

the GBA gamebase was run in v1.3beta
which changed the mdb file with new features.
i didn't have a backup so you might need to update with the version above.

just overwrite files in your Gamebase install dir.
or wait a couple of weeks for the final install version.

this should work with v1.2 gamebase.

the crashing you mention is caused by the extra long filenames,
fixed in the new version of gamebase.

Rhank you very much mad. Will try the 1.2 mdb file. Is it save to update the Gamvebase to 1.3 Beta ? Will it affect the installed gamebases so that they are not working properly anymore ?

Gamebase 1.3 makes changes in the database structure the first time a collection is opened.
After opening once in Gamebase 1.3, it cannot be opened in 1.2 anymore.

V1.3 is still a beta, so there is no guarantee that databases updated by 1.3 beta can be opened in the official release (although that's not likely to happen).
So keep a copy of every v1.2 MDB you have before opening it in V1.3.

What I'm doing is create a new folder somewhere on my harddrive (in my case C:\Gamebase), copy the contents of the Gamebase 1.2 installation to it and overwrite this with the 1.3 beta files.

So you have 2 seperate Gamebase installations: one for 1.2 databases and one for 1.3 databases. 1.2 databases will still be opened with Gamebase 1.2, so no updates will be made to the database structure.
V1.3 databases are opened by Gamebase 1.3, so you have the best of both worlds.

I use MDB file with support for ZIP files, because I did not want to wait for GameBase v1.3 . Now I've decided to back to .7z's, because rom packed as .7z occupies less space on disk. Will this be enough if I repack these roms from ZIP's to 7z's ?

Ofcourse I don't have MDB file with .7z support. Can anyone help me by upload this MDB file ?

I thought if .7z archives occupies less GB, would be better to use roms packed in .7z (6.6GB) instead of .zip (12GB). But probably no one can do MDB or whatever it is, to use .7z GBA roms ?

when the gamebase was originally done,
7 zip was not supported, so not used.

now it is, and multiple files can be extracted to sub folders.
so the 6GB merged collection can be made to work.
but relinking all those files. :shock:

i will upload a 7z merged rom version later.
when i get some spare time.

so just use the zip version for now. :wink:
