Complete Layman's Advice please:)

Sun Jan 24, 2010 7:54 am

Hi, and firstly hello, I've just joined the Forum to help relive my teenage years spent glued to the C64. Looking forward to seeing what games have stood the test of time.

Seem to have a problem; mostly because my computer knowledge stopped at BASIC.

In order to download the games, I first need an emulator if I understand correctly.

I have tried to download several emulators. The result is invariably a "zipped" file that the PC does not recognise; whatever happens, apart from somehow getting Lords of Midnight to work from the IceMark site, I've not been able to get any Commodore classics on my PC at all.

Could someone please provide step-by-step idiot-proof information on how to say, download an emulator with a view to playing Sentinel? Or Druid? Or Deactivators? (I'm hurting bad for some nostalgia)

Thanks to any who reply, glad to see the old machine still has fans:)

Download and Install 7zip. (its FREE)
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z465.exe

you will then be able to extract your downloaded game and emulator files.

download WinVICE (C64 Emulator).
as it is the easiest to set up in windows.
WinVICE: MS-Windows 32bit (Pentium-optimized)
http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/ ... CE-2.1.zip

you will need to setup a Joystick or configure a KEYSET.
to control the games.
from the VICE menu select SETTINGS
Joystick Settings...
from the JOYSTICK PORT #2 Window select KEYSET A.
then click config KEYSET A button
click SOUTH - and press your Joystick key for DOWN
click NORTH - and press your Joystick key for UP
click WEST - and press your Joystick key for LEFT
click EAST - and press your Joystick key for RIGHT
click Fire Button and press you Joystick Key Fire button
then click OK
and from the MENU Save your settings.

Now load your game file from the WinVICE menu.
depending on the file extention choose the correct option.

.D64 = Disk - Select Attach Disk Image to Drive 8
select file to run from the list in the disk window.

.T64 = Tape - Select Attach Tape from VICE menu
may need to type
LOAD"" (return)

.PRG = Program - you can drag the file into the emulator window.

you should be good to play some games now.

Hi, did as you said but now stuck (told you I wasn't too good with computers lol).

Downloaded 7-Zip, installed it. It's now a dektop icon, all fine.

Downloaded WinVice; Now I have a file folder called WinVice 2.1 on my desktop. If I click on it I get a list of files. There doesn't seem to be any option to do anything with them, like open WinVice and use the "menu" you describe.

So thanks, but still er, help?

:)

Double-click the file "x64.exe" to run the C64 version of Vice

Or you can get Windows to associate files with Vice automatically. Try to open a D64 file, "Select program from list", search for the x64.exe file, type "D64" into the blank description box and tick "Always use this program to open this type of file"

Return to “GB64 Help!”
