Re: 8-bit files offline ?
I was wondering what happened to his website. I used to download a lot of PDF files of C64 software from his search site, and poof...gone

Re: 8-bit files offline ?
I'm sad to see the changes. I knew the FTP was up and down, but hoped it was temporary or a reaction to most browsers moving away from allowing it. Here's hoping Shane is in good health and just found a hobby that required more attention. I guess I should have taken the opportunity to say, "Thank you" more. Glad as hell that this place is still up and I still have the chance to say thank you to all involved for the work that makes that happen.
Thank you GB64, a sane place away from the politics and jockying of CSDB! Cheers as we pour one out for 8-bit downloads!

Re: 8-bit files offline ?
Can you send me a PM link on this fix as well? I am glad the catalog is still listed here to peruse with the limited information and screenshots. I can crossreference to other sites and maybe the internetarchive as it usually has lots of large archives hosted. It is a little extra legwork and this site is still full of useful information..mad. wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 1:00 pmi know how to fix all broken game download links from 8bitfiles (FTP) to a working online source (HTTPS).
you just need to edit the address in the PHP
replace all
"ftp://8bitfiles.net/gamebase_64/"
with
"https://archive.org/download/?/?/"
pm for address if you don't know it.
May thy inkwell never dry and your parchments not fade away.

Hi There!
Is there a replacement website planned by anyone?
Is there a new server for all these programs?
Where would v19 be stored at?

Re: 8-bit files offline ?
GB64 is a digital preservation research project.
Most copyright laws have exemptions for research, and we'd like to think that GB64 falls into that category for all the meta-data collected.
However, given that the internet archive has known DCMA exemptions to host copyrighted material, Gamebase 64 in it's entirety is best found there alongside other digitally preserved media - by a library who will likely stick around for a very long time. At least there when the copyright wears off it will be available to be enjoyed by future generations.

Re: 8-bit files offline ?
Hi Like minded Commodore lovers & retrogamers,
Does anyone know how to reach Shane, the admin/owner of 8-bit files?
If it's a money issue preventing keeping the server up, I'm sure there are many people including me willing to donate funds to keep it running.
8bit is such an important resource, I'd hate to see it gone forever.
If someone is able to get in touch with him, suggest that he should start a Patreon & share the link so we can send in donations.
I'm sure most of us have gotten so much value out of the site over the years, it's more than fair to pitch in & help keep it alive.
