Any easy way to build Gamebase Mame from a dat-file?

Hi,
I tried to build a mame gamebase from the latest romcenter dat-file. I actually got the database "working", but there are huge problems with the romsets. The game browser displays all the individual roms of every single game/romset and of course nothing actually works
I'd only need the rom-files to be displayed correctly and the screenshots working. I don't care about the author's, manufacturer's etc. stats. I read some posts and those stated that building a Mame gamebase is a huge task Is this still the case?
