Welcome
to the Rare Games Corner! In this section from
time to time we'll upload a rare game that, as far as
we know, is not available over the internet or in any
of the circulating CD collections. It's a gift from
us, in order to help ease the suffering while waiting
for the Gamebase Collection to be released!

Alternate Reality - The City
1986 Datasoft
The game that introduces this section is Datasoft's
old classic RPG. All other previously available
versions crashed just after the main part loaded,
but not this one! Enjoy! |

Dribbling
1992 Idea Software
This is a football simulator that has been around
for quite a while, only it crashed the moment you
pressed the space on the crackers' intro. The game
is in Italian (who would have thought, eh?), but
thankfully there's no difficulty in understanding
what little text exists in the option screens :)
So, enjoy this 100% version and, as we've not seen
the game reviewed in any publication, why not post
back to our forum section and tell us how it compares
to the other football games around... |

Crusade in Europe
1985 Microprose
This strategy game's non-working version is extremely
widespread over the net. Unfortunately, it does
not contain a lot of needed hidden sectors and cannot
be repaired in any way. Well, it now does not need
to be repaired as we present here a 100% version,
complete with codes typed by yours truly... |

Rings of Medusa
1990 Starbyte Software
This is one of the last good RPG's to appear on
the C64. The German version is widely available,
however this official English version was nowhere
until today. For trivia sake I'll mention that this
version recently replaced in gamebase the Paramount/Alpha
Flight unofficially translated English version,
which is not widely available either. Although it
was a decent attempt by the 2 groups to offer the
game to the non-German RPG players, it is unavoidably
inferior to the official one... |

Gemstone
Healer
1986 Strategic Simulations Inc.
This is the sequel to Gemstone Warrior, as requested
through our forum. We recommend using G41 disks
(also known as G64 disks) whenever you create
a playing disk for this game, in order to avoid
various emulation problems. Interestingly, the
aforementioned prequel (Gemstone Warrior) seems
to load without problems only on the C64S emulator.
This
copy contains a ready-made data/map disk made
in a D64 image. The D64 data disk can be used
with the C64S emulator, but not with CCS64. If
you want to play it on CCS64 you must create a
G41 data disk instead. This game won't run on
VICE.

Micro-MUD
(Multi User Dungeon)
1988 Virgin Games
MUD was a popular multi-user online game, one
of the pioneers in the field. Enjoyed and loved
by many, it still survives today through sites
like http://ireland.iol.ie/~ecarroll/mud/.
This
C64 version of the game is an attempt to create
the illusion of playing online, without actually
being online. As such, it involves real time playing
(like Infocom's Borderzone) and many NPC's which
are trying to immitate real online players' behavior.
This
game is not only rare...it's ultra-rare: It appeared
on the shelves for a very short time, and, what's
more, NO version was made for any other computer
besides the C64!!! No wonder you won't find a
walkthrough for it anywhere, so, be our guest,
and try to solve it!
Note:
Use 'normal' loader on CCS64, or the game will
crash while loading the main part.

The
Rocky Horrow Show (128k Version)
1986 CRL
This week we make a small exception and present
a game that won't be in Gamebase64. Why? Because
it's for the C64's bigger cousin, the C128.
The
only game to my knowledge that has significant
improvements in the graphics from the C64 version,
this is a worthy addition to anyone's collection.
Note: Play
it on Vice's X128 emulator, only make sure to
turn disk drive emulation off and music on before
you load it up.

The
Shadows of Mordor
1987 Melbourne House
This week we bring you the Shadows of Mordor right
at your fingertips! The game's tape (text-only)
version is widely available, however this is the
disk version with graphics portraying all major
locations.

Footballer

1986 Gremlin Graphics
Does this week's rare game seem Greek to you?
Well, it should, since it's the Greek version
of the popular Gremlin title!! :-D

Tangled
Tales
1990 Origin Systems
This is classic RPG from Origin sporting very
beautiful and colourful graphics. It uses an icon
control system reminiscent of the one used by
Sierra On-Line in its first adventures for Windows
and is also one of the few 40-track C64 games
around--in fact, if you know another 40-track
game, drop us a line in the forum!

QIX
(US Version)
1989 Taito
This week we upload the US version of QIX, graciously
donated by Mason. For trivia sake we'd like to
mention that the usual version of QIX around (by
A.Trott) is a clone of the QIX game and was originally
published as STIX by Supersoft in 1984.

PORTAL
1987 Activision
|
|
 |
The first 100% emulatable copy of Portal (to our
knowledge), created only last week for your amusement.
Background:
Some years ago, a collection of C64 games came
out by Activision, playable on the PC using a
custom-made emulator. Because that emulator could
not cope with Portal's GCR-based protection, the
code of the game had to be modified. The modifiers
weren't bothered with Portal's save routines--they
just disabled them and instructed any would-be
players to use the emulator's save routines and
save the whole emulator state when wishing to
save the game. The resulting version of Portal
was not playable in a real C64 (when transferred),
nor on any emulator -- with the strange exception
of C64S (any more info on why this was so is welcome).
A
long time ago somebody copied for me his original
Portal disks. Unfortunately, after playing the
game for some time, I discovered that his 4th
side was corrupted, so there went my chance to
ever reach the end of the novel. When I first
got an internet connection, one of the first things
to do was copy my freshly downloaded 4th side
of Portal over the corrupted one. Luckily (since
I didn't have the knowledge at the time to do
it on purpose) this procedure kept the original's
GCR data, while copying the fresh data blocks
over the rest of the disk. This enabled me to
finally see the end, the portal, and the...fate
of the dolphins!
What
had to be done: Portal cannot function in D64
images because of the way it uses GCR IDs to detect
disk changes. In emulation, this is usually overcome
by putting the GCR ID in place of the header ID
(for example this is how we fixed Might &
Magic I). The emulator's code then actually reports
the header ID to any routine requesting the GCR
ID. Unfortunately this method could not work on
Portal for the simple reason that it has no space
for the header ID, as the whole track 18 is filled
with game data. As a result, the use of G64 images
(lately renamed to G41) was the only way out.
I knew for some time that I could make a decent
version of Portal if I spent some time on it--and
here you have it! A version of Portal that can
be played in CCS64 and VICE and will properly
save your position when asked.

Tai-Pan
1987 Ocean
Most copies of Tai-Pan around seem to be single-filed
freezes from tape, so here comes the complete
disk version. Enjoy!

Demon's
Winter
1988 Strategic Simulations Inc.
This game's copies on the net do not contain the
3rd side, resulting in confusion of players when
faced with the 'Please Insert Side C' message.
In addition, password protection forbids the average
player from entering the game proper. A password
file had to be written--and if anybody can properly
remove the protection pls let
us know!
UPDATE!
You can now download a password-free version,
thanks to Stephan Andres who succesfully
performed this difficult surgical operation! :)
Type
anything at the password screen (but you have
to type something!)

1985 Ariolasoft
The German version of this adventure is everywhere,
but the english version is not as abundant--a
fitting choice for the Corner!

Where
is Europe is Carmen Sandiego?
1988 Broderbund
All online copies of this game do not recognize
side 2. That is not the case with the copy presented
here...

Cyborg
1982 Sentient Software
Talk about a rare game! Most people don't even
know that a C64 version of Michael Berlyn's classic
futuristic adventure was released! Anyway, here
you have it. For your information, the C64 version
(like the PC version) does not contain the arcade
sequence of the Apple version.
I've actualy completed this game (using a walkthrough)
so I can verify that the copy presented here is
100%. It is heavily error-protected, so you can
play it only on the latest release of CCS64, or
on VICE.

Trump
Castle
1988 Capstone
As requested (quite insistently:) in our Forum,
a working copy of "The Ultimate Casino Gambling
Simulation" is here -- featuring games of
Blackjack, Craps, Keno, Poker, Roulette, and Slots!
Update!
Use NTSC mode or you won't be able to bet on all
games located on side 2!

Millenium
Warriors
1989 First Star
A great two-player game which offers challenge
to the single player as well. Not well known,
as it was published in Europe in the early 90s
when the fate of the C64 was dwindling.
